You’ve made a decision to start a new habit.  Super, that is the first step.  Now where do you go from here?  Discover tips to be successful at starting something new and “Rocking It” in today’s MissSippiPiddlin Tuesday’s Tips.

Plan

Make a plan

First things first, write down in detail, exactly what you want to achieve. We are visual beings.  90% of the things coming into the brain is by vision.  Seeing a plan down on paper will have a tremendous effect on you keeping that plan!

Set goals

Every plan needs goals.   Goal setting is turning your vision into a reality. Look at the “big picture” as your main goal but also divide that goal into smaller pieces.  Have mini-goals to achieve along the way. It will keep you on track and also motivate you.  Try not to think about the end result, focus only on one task at a time.

Make yourself a priority

I read this earlier, I don’t have time is the grown up version of my dog ate my homework.  Make time for yourself.  We all have crazy, busy lives and one thing we never have is time for ourselves. With work, family, kids activities it can get overwhelming.  We can not change how many hours are in the day, but we can find hidden time slots in any day by practicing smarter time management. You deserve “your” time, it is not selfish it is essential. If we don’t take time out we tend to feel tired, grumpy, frustrated and we quickly loose site of what IS important to us. Sure life happens and gets in the way but not every day.  Set aside a block of time start with ½ an hour.  Can’t do 30 minutes, try for 15minutes twice a day.  Anything is better than nothing.

Give up

No not that kind of giving up.  Try giving up one unhealthy thing in your life or one thing that is keeping you from your goals.  Start off by doing it for a week, can’t do a whole week, then go for 4 days.  Remember to stay focused on what you want the most not what you want now.

Reward yourself

When you stick with your plan and reach your goals have a reward for it.  It doesn’t have to be something to sabotage all you’ve worked for.  Maybe it’s a new pair of shoes or a day at the salon are great ideas.

Remember, you are an amazing person and so worth all the effort.  You can achieve so much by only taking that first step!

  1. I keep a list on my phone called “goal gifts.” Whenever I stick to my workout plan for a whole month or eat well for a consistent amount of time or hit a new fitness goal, I let myself get something off that list.

    • I totally agree Stephanie. If cutting out sugar is a goal it wouldn’t be a great idea to have a cupcake as a reward, but if that is what keeps you motivated enough then I say go for it! 🙂 Thank you for stopping by!

  4. Great advice!! The grown up version off the dog ate my homework-priceless!! We have to make time for ourselves to be able to take care of other. Such a hard commitment but one I have committed to.

    • It IS hard to stick with it and I too feel guilty taking time out for myself, but then I remind myself I’m not as productive nor very nice when I don’t get in my run or spin class. 🙂 Thank you for stopping by!

  7. Goals are a great way to keep yourself on track. I set 3-5 goals for myself each month, which helps me to focus on what is most important at that time.

  13. I think everything comes down to prioritizing. I love the “give up” tip. I think mine would be sleep. I really need to get in the habit of working out in the mornings.Sacrificing that hour of time I know will benefit me in the long run.
