Weekly Wrap #10 – Cajun Country Fun

Weekly Wrap #10 – Cajun Country Fun

This is a weekly link up that I’m co-hosting with my very good friend Holly from HoHo Runs. We want to connect with you and support fellow active women! We want to hear about your weekly adventures.  You are encouraged to include anything you did to be active or anything you considered fun. You can wrap it up for the week, weekend or an event. Yes even race recaps, we’d love to hear about it!

If you are new to the link up you can see our simple rules here.   Also: You can now link up beginning at 6 pm (CT) on Sunday evenings!

For this week’s edition, I’m calling it Cajun County Fun because I am wrapping up my week in the heart of Cajun Country, Louisiana! In fact, if you are reading this on Sunday night, or heck it could be even in the wee hours of Monday morning, it is highly likely my husband and I are traveling home.

Here’s how my week went:

Marathon Training Week #5

Yes, I’ve made it to week five and so far so good. If you’ll remember last week was my first real challenge I faced by getting in my long run and participating in a 5k for a great cause. It went smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy too! <Happy Dance>

I’m slowly building back up to the distance of a half for my race at the end of the month and hoping to squeeze in another fun 5k with my training run. I also got great inspiration from Lisa over at Running Out of Wine this week when she wrote a post about Time Management which prompted me to write down some of the things I’m doing to be able to balance it all. If you missed it, you can see my post here. Thank you, Lisa, for allowing me to share your content!

I got tons of encouragement from this post too! So thank you! I think the support from our blogging community is what keeps a lot of us motivated and inspired to not only reach for our goals but achieve them! I know it does for me!

Here’s how my week played out –

I started off my day with just over 5,000 steps. I met Tammy at the gym for leg work. This time, only body weight (Step ups, lunges, squats and even hit the core) and the next day I could tell I was a little sore but nothing like the past few weeks. So #success in my book!

After work, I had an appointment for a massage. Ahhhh I can’t put into words how great this felt, so you’ll just have to take my word for it. I also went ahead and made another appointment for after my race Halloween weekend!

Up bright and early when my running partner with 4-legs, wakes me up telling me it is time to go!! He gets so excited when I lay out his harness the night before. He loves to go with me! We were out the door, made it to our destination and even started my run all the while I could still see the stars out. An easy 3 miles to start my day!

I was a slacker this morning and only managed 3500 steps on my walk. This afternoon was arms and core work at the gym. My arms and shoulders were noodles when I left and I could feel the soreness through Friday. Tonight we tried a great new dish for us: Broccoli Rice Chicken casserole. How do you get your kids that do not like broccoli to eat it? Chop it up very fine and stick it in a casserole and when they ask why it has a green tint just say must be the spices in the rice… lol! Boom you just got your greens for the day!

If you saw my Instagram account you know I was excited to get the email informing me that Season 4 of American Horror Story was out on Netflix! We indulged in not 1 but 2 episodes tonight!

I got a text message from my running buddy Jen seeing if I was running so we met her for another early morning run. It was cloudy so it took even longer for it to get light outside and I run faster with her there, like a whole minute per mile faster and that is even with Wrangler stopping to pee on everything!

Cajun Country Fun

Today my husband got a new work truck and I got 3 pairs of shoes, REAL cheap! So we’re all good!

Weekly Wrap Cajun Country

I had 6,000 steps under my belt this morning. I managed to hit my step goal, but today was more of a rest day. I did drink up the Isopure Aminos to help me with recovery!

I wanted to get in my run before we left for our trip so I got up early and went to the campground this time for 7.1 miles. It was pitch black when I started so I had to use my light. I’d never ran in the light before and hoped it wouldn’t bounce or bother me, it didn’t! 🙂

I always feel less guilty about eating on the weekend if I get in my run first!

We got on the road by 9 and headed South. We stopped at Camping World to pick up some things and browse the new motor homes.

It was fun looking. Also made a stop by Cavenders on our way, before reaching our hotel.

Cajun Fun

It was a nice clean hotel connected to the casino and racetrack all under one roof!

We got settled in our room and hit the track! If you’ve never been to a horse race, let me be the first to tell you how much fun they can be. Yes, we are “horse people” but you don’t have to be at all. We were watching the quarter horse races, not the usual Thoroughbreds. Ya know we barrel race with quarter horses and a lot of times barrel horses get their start right on tracks like this. So that was fun for us to look at the owners, trainers and breeding of theses horses.

Shhh, we’re picking horses

I had been here once before, but G did all the betting. Well, this time he taught me how to go to the window to bet on one. Now granted our bets were all in the fun with only a couple dollars per bet, I think we splurged once and upped it to $15, but it was mostly fun play money. But I learned how to bet on the winner = Win, bet on the 2nd place horse = Place and bet on the 3rd place horse = Show.

down $2 here

As unorthodox as it was I had my own system of picking winners. It was a combination of their name, their looks, what color their silks were and the length of the track. In my book, short track horses were more stocky with motors for quick and fast, vs longer tracks for leaner, long legs an backs. Ha, I won a few lost a few and in the end we came out ahead if you count both our pockets.

After the races, we enjoyed dinner in the casino and did a little penny slot playing. When we walked out we were up $60 including the races. So turned out well for us this trip.

Since our blog is going live earlier on Sunday’s I try and get most of my post done ahead of time. If you are reading this, well Sunday, hasn’t yet come and apparently my crystal ball is a bit cloudy. I couldn’t find the time or WiFi service to update you on what happened today. Ahhh the cons of pre-blogging… But hey, you can always go checkout what fun I may be having by my Instagram Feed!

I will tell you we went to the Angola prison rodeo an it’s a lot easier getting in than getting out. We got to our car an 1.5 hours later just made it out of the gates. Freedom never felt so good!!

Looking Ahead

I have another giveaway I’ll be running soon and you’ll get a Roar out of it! 😉 So look for that.

Tell me, have you ever visited Louisiana? Where and what for?

Do you and your husband keep a tally on the things you get? We don’t really or at least he doesn’t think so… 😉

Tell me something fun you did this past week!

  1. Horse racing is cool. When I was a kid my parents used to take us to Quad City Downs – they had harness racing. I loved watching the horses and trying to help my parents pick out which ones to bet on. Plus I always wanted a horse, but we lived in town and it wasn’t something my parents wanted me to get into (my dad had raised horses – he actually had one named Kelly, but supposedly I am not named after the horse). But I digress…sounds like you had a good training week! And shoes!

  2. Looks like a nice week! Love your broccoli idea! I will have to try that with my kids. Sounds like you got a great deal on the shoes and 3 pairs, nice! I have been to the horse races once and it was a fun time trying to pick the winning horse.

  3. Sounds like a great training week! Massages after a race sound nice! I’ve never been to a horse race. So cool you were up $60 after the casino and races! I’ve never visited Louisiana but I remember doing a report on the state for a project in elementary school. All, I remember is that Mardi Gras is there lol, in New Orleans.

    • I am so looking forward to my massage after my next race! We had so much fun at the casino and racetrack! I just love Louisiana and it could so be my next home! lol We’ve been to NOLA several times but never during Mardi Gras! They say it is really something to see. Maybe I can change that soon! Great job Sherry on your 1st marathon! When are you doing it again??? 😉

  4. Sounds like a really great week. I have only been to the race track once. My dad bets on horses but I don’t know a thing about it ! Hope you had a nice, long weekend ! Enjoy your week.

  5. Looks like a fun weekend! Great job getting your workouts in, and I’m so glad that you have found the tips helpful and have been able to start incorporating them into your training!

  6. That sounds like a super fun weekend! I love watching the Kentucky Derby! I would love to go to the track and spend a few hours. You all left with money in your pocket so I am super impressed! Looks like your training is coming along well too- well planned massages I think are a great benefit! I upgraded my Fitbit this weekend so I am back on the board! 🙂

    • Yay I’m so glad you got you a new fitbit, it looks like mine, the charge? I love it, It is probably a good thing the racetrack isn’t that close to me, lol. It’s bad enough a casino in the middle of nowhere is 30 minutes from my house. But ya know we hardly ever go there! I see too many people there that look like they are gambling away their food or house payment…. I’m going to try and get a massage after key long runs, well as long as I can afford it anyway! 🙂

  7. Sounds like a good week. My family does not watch horse racing because my mom’s watched 2 in her life and both times a horse fell and broke its leg. Nope nope nope.

  8. Fun weekend! I’m so not a casino gambler. But I do love me some horsies! I choose by what they’re wearing as they parade into the starting thing. So scientific.
Marcia recently posted…Chicago Marathon Spectator ReportMy Profile

    • I have found that I love to play the penny slots. We are not big gamblers at all we will go in with a set amount of money usually $20 each and when it’s gone, we leave. Sometimes we can play for hours on that! I did love the horse races it is quite an experience! I choose like you do 🙂

  9. As much as I like vegetables, I do disguise broccoli with pasta or with cheese lol
You are good with your steps! I am a slacker on days I don’t run since I sit all day work 🙁
A massage sounds great. I think I am going to schedule one on taper week and treat my legs. I have never visited Louisiana. I like your big rolling! $60 up is a good way to leave the track 🙂
I will add my post in later I am blocked from the link up at work.
Karen recently posted…I Love SunshineMy Profile

    • It was so easy to hide the broccoli in the rice dish! I think I’ll try it with pasta too! I sit at a desk all day too! I try to get up as much as possible but hey even my bathroom is like 50 feet away. 🙁 Hey I tell you we could have lost the $60 and still had that much fun! Look forward to your post! Appreciate you so much!

  10. Very fun about the horse races, I have always wanted to go to one of those. But I have this weird thing, I want to go to one where I can wear one of those crazy fancy hats the ladies wear to them LOL
I have visited Louisiana once when I ran a marathon in New Orleans, I enjoyed seeing some of the sights and of course eating yummy Baguettes:)

    • OMG Kristy, I so want to go to the Kentucky Derby and wear me a fancy hat! I went to a bridal shower back a few months ago and it was themed Derby Style and we dressed up and wore the big hats! I haven’t had that much fun at a bridal shower in a long while!

NOLA has amazing foods there and such a variety too! I never leave there without trying something different! 🙂

  11. I’ve been to New Orleans once. We stayed in the French Quarter but did some sightseeing outside of the city. This was before Katrina, and I need to go back! One of my husband’s college friends was from Houma, LA and he was quite a character! Just what you’d expect from the bayou…

We have a huge horseracing track by my house, Arlington International Racecourse, and I bike past there in the mornings when they are warming up the horses. It never fails to thrill me…
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home recently posted…The Chicago Marathon: it’s a spectacle! My Profile

    • I bet he has that cajun accent so heavy too! At the track a man was there talking to some people and I just stood there mesmerized by his very heavy creole accent!

How cool is that you have a track near you! I missed them warming up the horses before the races because we didn’t go back to the barns this time. Last time we knew a few trainers and went to see them. That was a real treat for me even though horses and barn are very common with barrel racing. It was neat to see the things trainers and race horses do.

  12. I never thought about the fact that it would be easier to get into the prison than to get out, but I can see where that would be true. 🙂

I actually grew up in Louisiana (southwest, near Lake Charles). I’m excited because I have two potential work trips to New Orleans on the horizon and I’m looking forward to taking my husband for at least one of them. He LOVES food so it seems criminal that he’s never been somewhere so full of fantastic food!
    Jessica S recently posted…Weekly Wrap-Up: Race week!My Profile

    • Yes, Jessica a lot easier to get in than out! 🙂 How cool, I was born in AL but MS raised since I was 14 days old but I swear I could pack up everything and move to Louisiana! Wow how exciting to take your husband along with you. I agree he most definitely needs to experience New Orleans and all the great foods there! Thanks for stopping by!

  13. Yay for week five of training! I’ve never been to a horse race before in my life, but I know that I would have a lot of fun picking horses 🙂 Although the only picking I’ve done lately is helping my fiancé with his fantasy football draft 😛

    • I know right, 5 weeks down only 12 weeks to go! Woop Woop! Well, there is something I have no idea about and that’s fantasy football! I have a tremendous respect for those who do well in it. I would guess it’s not a lot different from betting on horses, you can really get into it with seeing the stats of the horses, jockeys, trainers and track records. Thanks for linking up with us this week!

    • Awww thank you, RJ I appreciate the comment on my hair. Girl, when I was little I swear I could have shaved my head! I fought and fought with this mess. Straight was THE style and wings and curls do not go together, lol I’m telling my age now, but you get the idea. Now, I have come to terms with it and learned IT is going to do just what IT wants to do. I now just embrace it! 🙂

  15. Sounds like you had a great training week!! I try to avoid casinos and I’ve never been to a race track either, which is strange, because we have one less than 30 minutes from me. I can’t handle all the loud noises, bells and whistles at casinos, though, I have no idea if it’s like that at the track.

    • Thanks Annette, I can see where all the noise from the casino can get to you, course when you hit it big on the slots I love to hear MY machine go crazy cause that means I’m winning money!!! It’s not too bad a the track though. Thank you for joining us this week, I do hope you’ll come back and link up with us again!

  18. Oh how cool is that, you winning on the Kentucky Derby! I so want to go to one live and yes I want to dress up with the big fancy hats! I would really like that and think it would be so much fun!!! I’m so glad you joined us this week for our weekly wrap, I hope you’ll link again! Have a great week!

  20. I can’t remember the last time we went to a horse race at a track. But, we used to go to the Steeple Chase at Callaway Gardens. I loved watching the horses race out in the woods…in the middle of nowhere! Everybody got all fancied up too. My company’s home office used to be in Baton Rouge so I’ve been there a few times and New Orleans too. Being up $60 is a HUGE win in my book! LOL. Keep up the good work with the training! You are doing awesome.

  21. We had a great time Holly. Wow, that Steeple Chase sounds interesting! I agree $60 was great! Heck, I’m happy if we just break even! Enjoy the rest of your week!

  22. Sounds like a great week Tricia!! I have actually never been to a horse race, they look like the would be fun to spectate. But I’m not a big gambler so I’m not sure I would place any bets, lol. That broccoli casserole sounds awesome. Can you believe my boys ASK for broccoli? Crazy weird I know. I have no idea why that is because I hated vegetables when I was a kid, lol. Have a great week Tricia!

I’ve only been to Louisiana once for my first half marathon in New Orleans. I think it may have been your first half too. I wish we had more time when we went to sightsee. I’m going back this weekend to do a half in Mandeville. Hope you have a great week!
