Weekly Wrap #19 Routine or Not

Good Sunday afternoon, or Monday morning either is just fine too! I feel like I’m getting back into the swing of things. This past week was a full week of work and regular training. Yay! Do you really miss your workouts when traveling or holidays get in the way?


My workouts consisted of 2 Personal Training sessions at the gym twice this week. Body weight lower body exercises on Monday followed by arm weights and weighted core exercises on Wednesday.


My running was done on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday’s long run of 14 miles. Let me just tell ya I struggled on the 14 too! I thought it would never end! I wondered how in the world I’m going to do almost another half that amount in a month, but I have to remind myself I’m not there yet…. One more 20 miler on the schedule for next weekend then home free until my marathon.

Eating Habits

Since I’m deep in marathon training, I had not really been watching my eating habits very closely the last several weeks. I had been trying to eat more carbs before races and long runs and I really think it has helped me. I know my trainer gets on to me all the time about limiting carbs especially at night, but she is usually helping more people with weightloss. Not that I couldn’t loose a few pounds, it’s just I need to keep up my energy to burn while I put my body through these last tough runs.

I can tell though maybe I overindulged a bit with being out of town and out of a regular schedule. I hope it will work itself out over the next few weeks without too much on my part.

Christmas Spirit

I usually have a hard time getting into the Spirit of Christmas. December is usually so busy I don’t take the time to really reflect on the season like I should. I really wanted to go to a singing Christmas tree program this weekend, but it didn’t work out. We did get to go to a live outdoor Nativity scene at a local church. You ride on hayrides through the various scenes showingΒ Joseph and Mary’s trip to Bethlehem and the birth of Christ. They do a great job too.

It is a joyful time of the year, for me and my family we celebrate the birth of Jesus. We also decorated homemade Christmas cookies on Sunday and also went to a Christmas Tree Farm to pick out a live tree this year. Check out my pictures on Instagram.

  1. How cool to go on a hayride for the nativity scene. Going to a Christmas tree farm and making cookies sounds like a wonderful way to get some spirit too! There never seems to be enough time to do the things I want to do in the month of December. I’m guilty of listening to Christmas music well into January because I always feel everything was so rushed. You’ve done great on your training. Almost there, sista! Almost there!

    • I so agree I have some great ideas of things I want to do but never ever enough time to do it in. Ahhhh I think even if I didn’t work I wouldn’t have enough time. The nativity scene really gets you back to the meaning of Christmas. I enjoyed it very much and so did a lot of people!

  2. I ran the Disney Half 5 years ago, and it was so hard to get all those miles in plus get ready for Christmas! I will say that it was great going there in January because it wasn’t super crowded…

    • I’m looking forward to being back at Disney and yes hope the crowds won’t be bad. I just hope I can walk afterwards to enjoy it some. It’s a damn if I do, damn if I don’t. I hate to pay money to go into the parks but do I try and do them before, doing all that walking, do I do it afterwards, will I be able to walk? Goodness!

  3. I definitely miss my workouts when I am traveling and can’t fit them in! I usually try to do something while away but it doesn’t always happen. I just feel better when I can still to my usual routine!

  4. I have just spent the last few hours figuring out where to swim and where I can rent a road bike for my 9 day vacation over the holidays! The hayride sounds like a lot of fun…hope you can enjoy the Christmas spirit! It is really weird here since it has been so warm it hardly seems like Christmas is fast approaching.

  5. I have a hard time getting in the Christmas spirit with all the busy that happens… Good for you doing fun things that reflect the real meaning of the season. I love Live Nativities – we were just talking about that today that you dont see them like you used to ‘back in the day’… apparently I’m 85 years old

  6. Happy blogiversary! Yes, your trainer is probably more used to helping people with weight loss. Endurance training is so much different! I follow the guidelines in Racing Weight, which says the more you train, the more high-quality carbs you should eat (bananas, potatoes, whole grains…not sugar). When I experimented with it and increased my carbs earlier this year, I found it substantially helped me feel really good on my runs, like you’re finding. Go with what your body is telling you!

  7. I’m a soon-to-be Registered dietitian, and I think it’s perfectly acceptable that you are loading up on carbs πŸ™‚ As you said, yours are for energy and you’re not primarily trying to lose weight. Yum, that gingerbread martini looks so good! Happy 1 year blogiversary, Tricia! πŸ™‚

  8. I have an exciting “final week of 2015” coming up as our family heads to the Rose Bowl. I have a couple races I’m eyeing out to do in So Cal (a 13.1 on New Years Eve morning) and a 5K on the 2nd. Yikes…and there will be tons of sight-seeing and some Iowa Hawkeye rallying (and hopefully celebrating). I don’t get too hung up on my workouts while on vacation. If the opportunity is there, I’ll do something. Since I stay pretty consistent when I’m not a vacation, I just let it go. I’m not going to regress that much from a few missed sweat sessions LOL

  9. I love the look of that gingerbread martini! Oh yum! I’ve “enjoyed” this holiday season too, but the closer it gets to race day, the less that will happen. One more 20 miler for you! How very exciting!! And I never miss my workouts when I’m on holiday. It seems every time we’re on holiday, we’re running a race too, lol!!

  11. I ran 15 miles this weekend, and in 2 weeks have a 17 miler. 3 hours it took me but I felt great about the accomplishment. Slow & steady ! You will rock your marathon.

    Yes, when I travel my routine and diet gets off. I try to pay really close attention to it right before my long runs because there is nothing worse than a crappy run… and I figure I can always indulge after the run !

  12. I have videos on my Ipad, so I’m always doing something — especially to counteract those vacation indulgences; I’m almost always up after a vacation.

    I think the carb thing is a really delicate balance. You definitely do need them to fuel your workouts. I think where we tend to get into trouble is turning to the more processed junk because we think we deserve it (or IDI syndrome, as I call it, I Deserve It).

    I definitely gained weight training for my first half, but I’ve gone on to lose weight while training. I’d like to get rid of those last few pounds because really it kind of sucks to keep trying to lose weight while training!).

    • Oh no wonder you have so much variety, that is a great idea to have them available on your ipad.
      I so need balance on the carbs, yes I do need them, but I do fall into the trap of the IDI lol. Yes I’m about 5-6 lbs over, no it’s not a lot of weight but on a short frame like I have, you notice in ALL the wrong places. I don’t need to stress over trying to loose weight and running 15-20 milers! Uggggh! Thanks for the encouragement Judy!

  13. That Gingerbread martinis looks amazing! I go to a nutritionist too and she says to limit carbs at night. I choose to ignore that part! Haha

  14. I definitely miss workouts. I try to hard to fit them in, pack the clothes I need, map out running routes, even try to get my family involved, but they’re just not into it, so more often than not my good intentions go down the drain. By the end of it all I’m craving my usual routing.

  16. So fun! I usually plan around travel and holidays in terms of working out. My gym is national so I can workout anywhere there is a location but also research community classes and either free or discounted for first timers classes in the area. Seems to usually work out but also don’t stress too much about it. In any case, no matter where I go I always pack running shoes πŸ™‚

  17. You got it done! That is what counts πŸ™‚ Last year at this time I was trying to marathon train and I liked the cooler temps. I don’t do that much for the holidays so it was okay for me, but then I got injured …booo!

  18. Your gingerbread martini looks yummy!

    I’m very good about keeping up my running when traveling, but sometime find it hard to fit in my weight training, especially at my mom’s house because there’s not a gym near by.

    Every year our family room Christmas tree sports more and more running ornaments. πŸ™‚ Otherwise, It’s just a fun combination collected over our 34 years of marriage ornaments. We have also have a Virginia Tech themed tree in our basement.

  19. Missed your post on Friday so happy belated blogiversary!! Way to go on your 14miler! You got it done and that is what matters! A live outdoor Nativity scene, Christmas cookies, and getting your tree from a tree farm are all great ways to get into the spirit of Christmas! This year has been so different for us with moving and all. We missed the tree lighting in the City and other events, but are still hoping to see some Christmas events this weekend!

  20. Sounds like you have been having some great times, wonderful Christmas activities with your family. Love the hayride nativity, very cool!
    This is terrible, but I haven’t been out to do anything traditional just yet, I’ve been a little sick but hopefully by later this week that will change and I can get out and see some of the sights:) I still have to do all my Christmas shopping and send out the cards, I am so behind. I hope once I get started on that later today it will help bring a bit more of the Christmas spirit!

  21. I’m finally getting in the Christmas spirit, but it’s a little late this year. Things have just so busy! This weekend I took in some lights and baked cookies, which always helps get me in the right spirit. I love the idea of the hayride nativity! That sounds lovely and like a great way to share the story with kids in particular. I hope you have a good week!

  22. Happy blogiversary! I haven’t been in the holiday spirit for years, and it’s been even tougher this year since the weather in Chicago has been CRAZY unseasonably warm. But my mom came up over the weekend and we walked around enjoying all the lights, holiday festivals, etc. It was really fun!

  24. I’ve missed some workouts over the past two weeks, but I figure it’s winter and one of the toughest times to fit in workouts. Everyone in the linkup is all doing really well keeping active and I think that’s commendable! I’m more upset about missed workouts in late summer/early fall.

    My Christmas color scheme has a lot of aquas and silver, but I started integrating more traditional colors this year with ornaments I’ve received from family members.

  27. Girl, you definitely need carbs when training for a marathon! Don’t let your trainer tell you otherwise. My husband and I are going on another little weekend getaway this weekend to Watercolor in FL, so I am pretty pumped about that! I try not to miss my workouts when we travel or during holidays. That’s what is so great about running … you can pretty much just pick up and go wherever! We don’t have a tree this year (small apartment, two humans and a large dog), but if we did, I think I would want to do lime green and silver or gold πŸ™‚

    • Oh wow Sam you weekend sounds amazing! I can’t wait to hear about it! I thought you had a super one last weekend in the mountains. Hey we’re going to Stone Mountain in GA and going to try and do some hiking while there. Maybe not rock climbing, no for sure not rock climbing πŸ™‚
