Our Weekend

I was looking forward to our trip to Oxford this weekend. I got to leave work exactly when I planned on it. (That doesn’t happen often) and we were on the road and had no problems getting to the RV place. Then we took a dive downhill. We get to the place and it’s not exactly what we are expecting and it sure didn’t look like what the website portrayed! No one was in the office so we tried to find a spot. We circled around back where we saw campers but these looked to be more like monthly rental spots because of all the “stuff” around the campers. We found a few spots open near the front but these were not the full hookups, what I paid for. I tried calling the number and only got the answering machine. Ugggh! We had to get to packet pickup so pulled in and jumped in the car to leave.

For the moment, I forgot about our hook up problems with the sight of the Ole Miss campus. It is a beautiful historic place and I was excited to be here.

oxford ms weekend

The finish was inside the Manning Center. I had never been in here before and it was something to see! A very nice updated facility!

I’ll do a recap on the race so I’ll save the details for that!

We got a ton of stuff there at the expo too. We had time so I visited every vendor I was even remotely interested in. They always have stuff to give away even if it’s just pens, who doesn’t need extra pens laying around right?

My pre-race carb loading tradition is pizza or my favorite a calzone so we asked on of the local vendors there (another good reason to talk to them, they are usually local and can give you the 411 on great places to eat).

They recommended two places, Proud Larry’s and Soulshine Pizza Factory. We have been to the latter in Jackson so we opted for the new place.

Eating on the outdoor patio

The weather was great for sitting outside on the patio and it reminded me of summertime. It was a very casual atmosphere. We got an appetizer that I did not get a picture of. We were hungry you hear??

oxford ms weekend

I got the Spinach calzone. It came with mushrooms but I left them off. I usually have pepperoni added but I just forgot. 🙁 It was still very good!

After dinner, we had to make a special trip to an athletic store to get me a pair of compression shorts to wear under my skirt. Yes, I know cutting it very close. I turned my closet upside down before we left looking for mine!!!! Have you ever done this?

After that, we make another traditional trip to Walmart, you know cause we can’t go anywhere without going to one!!! But hey, know what I found? Peeps Chocolate Marshmallow Flavored Milk!  I know right? Has any of you seen this or tried it? I wanted too, ya know just because but I didn’t get it. 🙁

Back to the RV to lay out everything and get ready for my run tomorrow, 5 AM wake up call is going to come early.

Race Day

The alarm went off and actually I was ready to get my day started! A little coffee, a little food some Body Glide a few other things and by 6:10 we were headed to the start line!

The only other person I knew that would be there was Stetson and I just so happened to run into him walking in.

One thing I noticed was not many people “dressed up” like with skirts or anything out of the ordinary for a training run. I didn’t even see many cool prints on leggings. I did still get several compliments on my skirt! One I remember was a couple of guys (one was dressed up like Jack Sparrow) in a neighboorhood and had a table set up with free beer. I came by and they said, “Anyone that will wear a skirt like that needs a beer!” Humm, I guess that was a compliment, I guess I could take it as an insult, lol!!!

My race went well, this one was clearly marked so no worries taking the wrong course like last time! I was okay with my time of 2:27. I usually say any time I can come in under 2.5 is a plus for me, but it did get me to thinking and wanting to be faster. It also got me to thinking I have not been doing much training on hills.

All in all, it was a good race.

oxford ms weekend

I didn’t stay too long after the race, we had to move our RV and see about another place to stay for the night. Since we were in the car we stopped by the State Park at Sardis Lake. The park ranger and man in the office were super nice and there were plenty of places to get. We even got our choice of sites.

We headed back to get the RV and had planned on getting propane there because it was posted they had it on the website and on the huge sign out front, well that turned out to be untrue! Another nail in the coffin of us ever staying here again. Maybe I should say the guy behind the counter said all he did was the paintball stuff. There is also a paintball facility right there and the rv office and paintball office is the same. Apparently they need to stick with the paintball and the month by month RV site and leave the others alone.

It did help my feelings as we were leaving a couple stopped us and asked us about our stay here that they were looking for a future use. We told them exactly what all happened. Ya know the word of mouth is a great tool!

After an extra trip back to the nearest town to Sardis Lake to get our tanks filled we hooked up, showered and relaxed a bit before heading back to Oxford to eat dinner.

Tonight we decided on Ajax Diner.

One of Eli Manning’s favorite restaurants, Ajax has been named “Best Downhome Soul Food” by Mississippi Magazine three years in a row, in addition to the magazine’s “Best Cornbread” and “Best Plate Lunch” titles. Ajax holds many local titles, including The Oxford Eagle’s “Best Plate Lunch,” “Best Burger,” “Casual Dining” and  “Best of the Best.” Needless to say, Ajax is definitely a spot you need to try if you’re in Oxford.

We were not disappointed here at all! I had the pot roast with mashed potatoes and gravy and the sweet potato casserole. Mr. Sippi had the hamburger steak, sweet potato casserole too and a broccoli rice casserole that was wonderful!  We left full and needed to walk around the Square a bit before getting in the car!  We did a little exploring around the City and on the Ole Miss campus before heading back to the RV to turn in for the night.

I got up to cloudy skies and even misting rain. I still put my shoes on and walked for about 40 minutes to shake out my legs and to get in some steps knowing the rest of the day I would be lazy. I had some problems connecting to my wifi at the campground so we stopped at a sports bar for lunch and I scrambled to get my post ready to go live while we’d be on the road. It’s a good think I took my own advice with my tips for Using Evernote in Blogging. I hope you didn’t miss it!

What’s coming up?

I’ll be participating in SweatPink’s Sip n Sweat this Thursday and I’ve already put the bug in a few friends ears to celebrate with me. Course for some it was a no brainer, all I had to do was say wine. 🙂 You know who you are, no denying it!

Rock n Roll New Orleans Half Marathon is next weekend, yes, it’s that time again! I’m so excited this will be my third time to participate in this race. It should turn out to be a great weekend!!! Don’t forget to keep up with me on Instagram to see what all I’m getting into this week and weekend!

How did you handle a situation where you did not get your money’s worth? I’d love to hear below what you did.

Have you forgotten something major at home expecting to get a replacement once you get here? How’d it work out for you?

I hope each of you have a wonderful week and I can’t wait to see what is going on in your neck of the woods!

  1. You have been a busy lady!! Sounds like you had some amazing eats on the road. And a nice experience. Strange that not many people wore skirts or dressed up much. I think you looked really cute! I look forward to the race recap!
Kelli recently posted…The end of an eraMy Profile

    • Kelli, I think almost too amazing eats. As bad as I want too be able to eat what I want, it is just catching up with me. Ahhhh, I really hate to be in the mindset of things I can not have.

When I looked around and didn’t see many people dressed out of the norm, a year ago I would have been so self-conscious this it would have affected my run. This time, I was like Well I’ll sure stand out now won’t I! I think I needed to get here!

  2. I was the only sparkly one at my race too, but it was a very small event compared to yours. Your first campground sounds miserable. I’m glad you found another. I love anything made with spinach and that calzone would be right up my alley. That’s a great finish time on a hilly course. Looking forward to next weekend!

    • There really wasn’t that many at this run. It is the first year they put it on. They had a great turnout at the expo with almost 1000 visitors I ready but less than 200 actually running. I thought it was ok but I didn’t realize how close to the end I really was until I saw my stats. 🙁

  4. Congrats on the race! And I love the outfit! I ended up buying a spibelt at the expo before my first marathon, because I realized I had more gels than my other belt could hold. It ended up working out ok, but I know its never a good idea to try something new like that on race day!

    Looking forward to the recap.

    • Thankfully there was another park close by. I’m glad it didn’t work out cause we would not have visited the state park otherwise. It was a huge lake, nice scenery and $10 cheaper per night you can’t beat that! I love pens too! I’m a pen whore, shhhh! 🙂

  6. How adorable are you?!??! Congrats on the race! And that calzone looked a-ma-zing. I am always paranoid about forgetting something when I go away for a race so I usually start packing the week before we leave, ha ha. And I make a checklist -that way if I can’t find something, I have time to either get a replacement or find it.

    I love spinach calzones…yummmmy.
Your race outfit was adorable 🙂
Tracking your steps is a good way to gauge your active level, I need to pay attention more.

  8. Bummer about the RV place but it sounds like it did not ruin your weekend at all. I will definitely contact a company about poor service – if I can find someone to contact! I think your outfit looked great and brilliant idea to ask expo workers where to eat.

    • Sounds like we both got lucky with finding our gear prior to the race. I was sweating bullets though. I ended up getting some Nike compression shorts for just under $40. At the race, the Ole Miss track and field department had bends of athletic shirts, shorts, etc. They had pretty much the same thing, Nike brand and all for $5, yes $5! Only thing was they had XS sizes left. 🙁 All this junk is not gonna fit in an XS anything!!! Bahahaha!

Love that your able to take the RV around for each race, that probably totally saves you so much money not having to stay in hotels! Plus gas prices are actually low enough people can afford to pull trailers, LOL I am just hoping the prices stay low here come summer, I’d love to get a little traveling in before they go up!
I ran RnR New Orleans back in 2012, it was a great race. I had the flu and I was miserable the whole time, but that was just something out of my control, the rest of the race was pretty good I loved getting to run through all the different area’s of New Orleans that I normally probably wouldn’t venture into. 36. First of all, congrats on your race! I look forward to reading all about it 🙂 I’m a diehard Virginia Tech fan, but I would love to see Ole Miss’s campus some day and I wouldn’t mind to catch a ball game there either.

We do a fair amount of camping and we have had our share of bad experiences. I can’t understand why some places just don’t seem to care – we’ve even had a few KOA’s like that. But that is unusual for them. I have this thing I do, though, when it comes to goods and services and I feel like I’ve been wronged or I don’t get my money’s worth. My husband calls it “The Stare” and let me tell you it works! Basically I calmly and politely explain my problem, I allow them to respond, and if I’m not satisfied (i.e. if they don’t offer some type of solution), I just stand there and look them straight in the eyes. It has a 99% success rate. Either the person feels awkward and just keeps talking and offers me something to make up for the issue or they go and get the manager. My husband says I can be a shrewd as an Arab trader, haha.
Meagan recently posted…TNF ECS 50K Training – Week 8My Profile

Apparently, my letter writing skills have paid off as an update to my fiasco this weekend I’m getting an additional discount for our disatisification. I was hoping to get a full refund but I’m happy with the response from the manager and the discount!
