Weekly Wrap 82 One Race Two Causes

Before I get into how my race weekend went here is my Weekly Workout Summary:

Weekly Wrap 82 Wrapping Up February

Children’s Classic 10k

On Saturday, Mr. Sippi and I along with my running buddy, Tammy and her husband headed to Hattiesburg, MS to run in the Children’s Classic 5k/10k. I did not know anything about this race until just about a month ago. I was looking for shorter races to run and one’s that could be a day trip.

Weekly Wrap 82 One Race Two Causes

I saw a flyer on it and knew it benefited The Children’s Center. The Children’s Center helps children with disabilities with communication, developmental and therapeutic services among many others. Nothing like getting to do something I love and supporting a great cause at the very same time. Win -Win!

The race location was about 90 miles from me and with a start time of 9:30 I didn’t have to get up much earlier than I normally would. I did have to get our bib’s by 8:30 and we had more time that I would have liked to hang out before the race. It was cool and a bit windy and I kept my jacket on until the last minute.

Tammy and I ran the 10k which started before the 5k, that the men ran in. It was a run strictly on the University of Southern Mississippi campus and the first time around was quite scenic and beautiful. We didn’t run the entire course twice but a lot of it, by the second time around I was getting tired of not only running but seeing the same thing.

I normally get caught up and go out faster than I should and therefore I usually don’t have much left in the tank, today was no exception. One reason Tammy and I do so well together is, she takes a bit to warm up and I need to take it slower at first. She did try to tell me we needed to slow down but I felt good at the time. I made it til about 5.5 miles then it felt a lot harder than it had been.

Tammy was right there quick to let me know how I had pushed her in the beginning and I was not going to quit on her now! 🙂 That’s exactly the motivation I needed, and even though I tried to get her to go ahead we crossed the finish together.

Anthony, Tammy, Greg, Me and Stetson

I didn’t have any real time goals, I’ve only done a couple 10k’s, my times before were 1:06 or 1:08,  I did want to push to see what I could do since it’s been awhile since I’ve raced this distance.  At no point did I ever consider I could get so close to running it in an hour. I think it was a great accomplishment to shave off that much. My official time was 1:00:44. Just wow!

I also have to brag on my husband for his efforts in the 5k race as well, he blew his previous best time out of the park too! It was just a super great day for all of us running wise!

Flex it Pink Virtual 10K

#Runfortherescues Virtual Run

I also thought this was the perfect time to run the Flex it Pink virtual 10k benefiting Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue. I’m a sucker for dogs and charities benefiting them so when I saw earlier in the year they had a virtual run, I was so in! Another appealing factor was the super cute tank and medal!

Coming up

I hope you’ll join me back here Tuesday or Wednesday where I’ll do a quick check in with my goals for the year.

Racing wise, I’ve got two half’s coming up with the first being in Tuscaloosa, AL. Mr. Sippi is in for the 5k again. Our time is up at the campground so we’ve tossed around the idea of driving over in the RV just for the night, instead of getting up so early, so we’ll see how that turns out.

The following weekend I’ll get to be back with my co-host and friend, Holly for a fun filled girls weekend. 🙂

What’s the last virtual run you’ve done? Got any coming up? Do you pick them by the bling or the cause or both?

Going to wrap up this Weekly Wrap 82 One Race Two Causes post right here. It’s a bit cooler outside but I hope that means we’ll get to enjoy a campfire tonight and maybe even some smores.

Cheers,
Tr!c!@

  4. What a great race and congrats on an awesome time. Shaving that much time off is fantastic!

When a race offers a 10K and 5K option on the same day, I always struggle which to sign up for (especially when they both give out the same medal..lol). It’s like why put yourself through the extra miles for the same bling…lol. But I know it’s about the achievement and all that. I haven’t races a 10K since 2013 but I do have one coming up this spring and I know for sure I will not get back down to my old time..womp womp!

Thanks for the link up Tricia!

  5. Great job in the race! Thats awesome that you and your friend were able to push each other. Sounds like you have some fun things coming up!

  13. Congratulations on your 10K PR and taking off so much time from the last 10K! Also I don’t usually do “virtual races” because I just can’t afford that and I’m competitive (I like running after others, haha), but that is a super cute medal and tank top, plus a great cause to run for, so I can see why you did it! Looks like a great week all around and I hope this one is too.

  17. What a serious PR! You and I both run the same with Tammy…push her in the beginning and she pushes us in the end…a perfect partnership! 🙂 Sounds like you guys had a great time! Can’t wait to hear all about the Ttown half…hopefully it’ll be another PR for both you and Mr. Sippi 🙂 Miss you!

  18. Congrats on that PR! Great job!

Although I have several friends I run with occasionally, none of them are the perfect fit. Maybe someday I’ll find someone who is . . . Darlene keeps waiting for me to get faster, but I think she’s overly optimistic on that one — not that I can’t get faster, but I think she’d have to get slower for us to be really well suited to each other.

I can’t get into virtual races, although of course a rescue is always near & dear to my heart. 🙂

  20. What a great cause for a virtual run! I’ve only done two, but I’ve liked both causes and would do it again if they were offered.

  21. Way to go on your 10K – I’d love to get my time down to around 1 hour!
I’ve never done a virtual run! One of the reason I like doing races is the people, so I struggle with virtual runs.

  22. Congratulations on your 10K PR!!! That is amazing!! I’m glad you had a friend to help you push through!

  23. You nailed that 10K and helped 2 great causes to boot! That is my kind of grand slam weekend! Congrats to the hubby too- you have been training him well! 🙂 Sounds like a real solid week and you always have some fun races in the pipeline to look forward too! Have a great week!

  25. way to go on your 10k time!! soon you’ll be under an hour! I’ve only been there twice I think and I really long to be there again. we just have to keep plugging along, right? Great causes for running this weekend in any case, well done!

No virtual runs – I did a virtual challenge in January and I’ll tell you I did it for two reasons: my friend Rob asked me to do it and try to get others interested in it (he used to be the race director for RnR Liverpool and Dublin) and the other reason was definitely for the bling… which I haven’t submitted my proof for yet… (yes, I’m way behind on things…). I did run virtually once for Dani’s (at weightoffmyshoulders.com) 2 year run streak and I once did a virtual challenge with 4 others for a Nike running challenge. That was absolute AGES ago though.
Renee recently posted…Weekly Wrap – Week 8My Profile

    • Wow that’s a lot of virtual challenges, awesome job on the 2 year run streak that is not easy! Heck I have a hard time with just doing it over the summer and then I really missed a day.
I love running for a reason it kind of takes the focus off me and gives me a reason to keep going. When I had to dig deep to get my PR on Saturday, all I could think of was the kids who have challenges and most will never be able to run races like this. It is what helped me cross that finish strong!
Tricia recently posted…Wrapping up February GoalsMy Profile

  26. Congrats on your 10K PR!! Always a nice surprise when you don’t realize it until it’s done! 😉 The last virtual runs I did was the WinterWonderland Rock’n’Roll virtuasl and it was a great incentive to run in the winter, awesome bling too! 🙂

  28. Congrats on an awesome 10k pr! I haven’t raced that distance in a very long time, but I think it’s a perfect running fitness check 🙂

  29. That’s a huge amount of time to take off of your 10k. Congrats! Your hard work is definitely paying off. It is wonderful that you have someone to run with that can challenge you and vice versa. Tammy sounds like the perfect match. I’m looking forward to seeing you soon!

  30. Great job on your 10k and your running crew looks like a great group! Tammy sounds like a great match for training and racing. Keep it up, Tricia! I love following your race adventures – and props for getting your hubs to race, too!

  31. Busy busy busy! I love that you have an awesome running friend! That makes all the difference in the world!

The last virtual run I did was in honor of pugs. There is a blogger who has been doing a pug virtual for the past three years, and, I know this comes as a huge shock, but I had to have the medals. They are always pugs in Halloween costumes, and they have a special place on my medal rack. Because pugs.

  32. I love smaller charity runs. I’d rather pay for a bunch of those knowing my money is going to a good cause then get big swag/medals and a t-shirt. There is one coming up and I haven’t been able to do it in a few years so I’m thinking I need to register for it.

  33. Sounds like it was so much fun! I love that you guys crossed the finish line together.

I’ve never done a virtual. Weird, I know!

  35. Love the idea of making a day trip out of a shorter race! It’s never crossed my mind, but sounds like a fun idea & I bet it would open up a HUGE pool of races around me. Within a 1.5 – 2 hour drive there are a few other bigger cities that also have tons of races. I’ve always considered going for a half, but never just a 5K & then changing to enjoy the day.

    • If nothing else you get to enjoy your run on a different route. It was great fun to run on campus then eat and shop before headed home!

  36. First off, congrats on the big PR! Great job! Second, that was such a good idea to combine the two races. I haven’t done a virtual run in at least a year. I think it’s pretty cool you can earn a cute medal while contributing to a great cause.
Elizabeth recently posted…Weekly Review: Wahoo! The house sold!My Profile

    • You know I debated on whether I should wear the virtual race shirt to the race, crazy I know but I did and actually had a compliment on it! I am glad I could combine the two!

  37. Congrats on that 10K PR! How awesome is that! Interesting that it was a 930 start….seems so late

    • It was such a late start but actually it worked out fine since the race was 90 miles. I had plenty of time to eat and drink my coffee on the ride over!

  38. I hope you got to have some s’mores! Congrats on SMASHING your 10km PR and a big congrats to Mr. Sippi as well! I haven’t done any virtual runs but I think that would be a fun way to stay accountable. I don’t know where you find out about these things though!

    • Yes you are right virtual runs would make for great accountability! This one I found on Flex it Pink’s site, they have about 5-6 a year. You can just search Virtual runs and you’ll get back more than you can run in!
